The Boston Red Sox are suddenly in need of a first baseman. Triston Casas is out for the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery. Rafael Devers has made it clear he is not willing to move to first base, so Craig Breslow and the Red Sox will need to take his advice and "hit the market."
Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter suggested the Red Sox try to get Rhys Hoskins from the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers are in third place in the National League Central and could be sellers near the deadline.
"The Red Sox have yet to make an outside move to address the loss of Triston Casas to a season-ending knee injury," wrote Reuter. "Instead, they've turned to Abraham Toro, Nick Sogard and the now-injured Romy González. They could use the opening on the infield as a way to get top prospect Marcelo Mayer into the lineup, but a trade for someone like Rhys Hoskins or Nathaniel Lowe also remains a real possibility."
Hoskins signed a two-year, $34 million deal last offseason. He tore his ACL and missed all of the 2023 season. He ended up signing a deal that had a player option for 2026 and a mutual option for 2027.
His 2027 option is valued at $18 million. With the way he is playing right now, he could opt out and find a better deal on the open market. If the Brewers fear that happening, they could look to flip him for prospects.
Hoskins is slashing .292/.396/.462 with five home runs. He is carrying the Brewers' offense right now, but if he does not get some help soon, the Brewers could fall out of contention, increasing the odds he is traded.
Hoskins hit 26 home runs last season, but his batting average has jumped this season. He has shown he has consistent 20-30 home run power. He could be a great addition to the Red Sox as they look to pass the Yankees in the American League East.
