Red Sox C acquired in trade with Yankees to participate in rookie program

The Red Sox invited seven players, including recent trade acquisition Carlos Narvaez, to participate in their 2025 Rookie Development Program this coming week.

The players will speak with the media Tuesday.

Boston acquired Narvaez, a 26-year-old catcher, from the Yankees in exchange for pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz on Dec. 11. The deal also included the Red Sox sending $250,000 of international bonus pool space money to New York.

All the members of the Red Sox’ “Big Three” — outfielder Roman Anthony, shortstop Marcelo Mayer and infielder/outfielder Kristian Campbell — will attend the camp. Baseball America ranks Anthony No. 1 on its Top 100 list. It ranks Mayer No. 10 and Campbell No. 24.

Outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia and right-handed pitching prospect Hunter Dobbins — who were added to the 40-man roster in November — will participate as well. So will David Sandlin, a 23-year-old righty who reached 101.4 mph with his fastball last season after being acquired from the Royals for reliever John Schreiber.

Narvaez is probably the participant who Red Sox fans are least familiar with, but he has a strong chance to make the 2025 Opening Day roster. He and Connor Wong are the only two catchers on the 40-man roster.

Narvaez, a native of Venezuela, has appeared in just six major league games, all coming with the Yankees last season. He went 3-for-13 with three singles, two walks and six strikeouts. He threw out 1-of-2 base stealers.

He batted .254 with a .370 on-base percentage, .412 slugging percentage, .782 OPS, 11 homers, 20 doubles, 58 RBIs, 54 runs and 56 walks and 105 strikeouts in 96 games (403 plate appearances) for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2024. He has thrown out 30% of base stealers in his eight-year minor league career.
