Manager Alex Cora and the Boston Red Sox have now won two straight games vs the Detroit Tigers following their blowout 5-0 loss to Detroit in the first game of their weekend series on Thursday. On Sunday, the Red Sox will once again take the field to look for a 3-1 series win over the Tigers within the friendly confines of Fenway Park, but the team will be without one of its brightest young prospects when it does so due to an injury sustained during the game on Saturday.
During Saturday's game, second baseman Vaughn Grissom injured his hamstring running to first base on a ground ball that occurred during the second inning, and is now slated to undergo imaging on the injury.
“He (Grissom) is actually getting an MRI to see where we’re at,” said Cora, per Christopher Smith of masslive.com.
Cora also provided an update on Romy Gonzalez, who was also placed on the injured list on Sunday morning with a strain in his left hamstring.
“We don’t expect Romy’s to be that long,” said Cora, to the relief of Red Sox fans everywhere.
A worrisome injury
Of course, this is not the first time that Vaughn Grissom has dealt with an injured hamstring thus far on the young campaign. Grissom was forced to miss the first 32 games of the regular season this year after sustaining a hamstring injury during spring training, and Cora is hopeful that this injury won't take as long to recover from as the last one.
“We’re not there yet,” Cora said. “He feels like it wasn’t as bad as in spring training. But he’s getting imaging so we’ll know.”
Cora also provided more context on the injury to Gonzalez.
“Just felt tight yesterday,” Cora said. “He wasn’t a go today. It was going to take a few days. So we needed to make the move.”
Grissom was brought into the Red Sox via trade from the Atlanta Braves this past offseason after a promising but at times underwhelming stint to open up his career in Atlanta.
