Last week, the Boston Red Sox made a notable move for their 26-man roster, trading for New York Mets utility infielder Zack Short. With Short joining the Red Sox, the team had to make a corresponding move, designating veteran Pablo Reyes for assignment.
Anytime a player is designated for assignment, it’s not 100 percent sure he will clear waivers and stay within the organization as other teams can put in their claims to add said player to their roster.
Thankfully, for Boston that wasn’t the case. Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reported on Monday that Reyes cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Worcester. Cotillo adds the 30-year-old will join WooSox and remain in the organization as a non-40-man roster player.
After playing well in 2023 with the Red Sox (.287 with two home runs and 20 RBI), Reyes saw his production dip early this season. The 30-year-old infielder slashed .183/.234/.217 with two doubles and five RBI. He also had a BAbip of .268 and a hard-hit rate of 31.7%.
In addition to his struggles at the plate, Reyes didn’t fare well defensively, playing mostly at third base (11 games) and second base (nine games).
The veteran infielder struggled at the hot corner with a .852 fielding percentage with four errors. Meanwhile, Reyes played better at second base, producing a 1.000 fielding percentage, zero errors, and two double plays turned.
The Red Sox will hope Reyes can fix his swing and get back on track in Triple-A, as they might need him again at some point this season.
