Manager Alex Cora said everything went well during Brayan Bello’s first rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday. He’ll make his next rehab start for the WooSox on Sunday, manager Alex Cora confirmed.
Bello topped out at 97.3 mph and allowed four runs, four hits and two walks while striking out five in 2 ⅓ innings against Jacksonville.
“Feeling good. Everybody was excited about yesterday,” Cora said before the Red Sox’ game against the Orioles on Wednesday here at Camden Yards.
Bello (right shoulder strain) got up to 47 pitches and threw 68.1% strikes.
It sounds like Bello will need three rehab starts before returning.
“We’ll talk about it, but I don’t think it’s next week,” Cora said about when Bello might be activated from the IL to start a game for Boston.
He threw 18 sinkers, averaging 96.2 mph and topping out at 97.3 mph. He added 16 sliders, nine changeups and four four-seam fastballs. The four-seamer topped out at 96.7 mph and averaged 95.8 mph.
Lucas Giolito pitches 2.1 scoreless innings
Lucas Giolito, who began the season on the IL with a left hamstring strain, pitched 2 ⅓ scoreless innings in a rehab start for the WooSox on Wednesday.
Giolito averaged 93.2 mph with his 26 four-seam fastballs and topped out at 94.7 mph. He also threw 13 changeups, 11 sliders and one curveball, according to Statcast.
Liam Hendriks throws out to 120 feet
Reliever Liam Hendriks, who began the season on the IL with right elbow inflammation, threw out to 120 feet here at Camden Yards during Boston’s day off Tuesday.
“We’ll keep doing the things that we’re doing,” Cora said. “No mound progression yet. But he’s feeling better.”
Cora said Hendriks might be able to throw off the mound this coming weekend.
