The Boston Red Sox appear to be one of the most aggressive teams in free agency this winter. They're also being connected to a few of the top stars on the trade market, but first Boston will take a crack at free agency.
USA Today's Bob Nightengale has pitched the idea that Boston could be pursuing one of the infielders on the market this winter to play third base. This would cause Boston to move star Rafael Devers off third base to make room.
"The Red Sox also have strong interest in All-Star free-agent shortstop Willy Adames, who is willing to move to third base," Nightengale wrote. "They have scheduled an upcoming meeting and have internally discussed moving Rafael Devers off third base. They could also sign free agent Alex Bregman or trade for St. Louis Cardinals All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado."
Adding talent is adding talent, but this kind of move wouldn't make much sense for Boston. Each of these third baseman would require a significant amount of money to pay them, with Willy Adames likely demanding a contract near $200 million.
Boston has better places to spend this kind of money right now. It has holes in the starting rotation, bullpen, and other spots throughout the lineup besides at third base.
The only reason that a move like this should be made is if Boston desperately wants to move Devers from third base to another position. If the Red Sox are just looking to add any sort of talent they can acquire, this would be quite the expensive way to do it.
