Entering this game 6-4, the Red Sox were tied with the New York Yankees for first place. Sitting right behind the two powerhouses was Toronto at 5-5. While the Red Sox made a big move in free agency, signing two-time All-Star Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million deal, they also returned several key players.

One huge piece to Boston's team last season was catcher Connor Wong. Enjoying a breakout campaign in 2024, the former third round pick posted a career-high 110 OPS+ while driving in 52 runs. Wong left Monday's game against Toronto before tallying an at-bat, and the Red Sox have since made the unfortunate announcement that he suffered a hand contusion.

"The Red Sox announce Connor Wong left the game with a left hand contusion," Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald wrote on X.

Wong has started slow in 2025, but his bat was an integral piece to Boston's lineup last season. While he finished just short of the minimum plate appearances to qualify for MLB leaderboards, Wong's .758 OPS in 2024 would have ranked third among qualified American League catchers (via MLB stats).

The 28-year-old being removed after one inning on Monday is unfortunate for Boston as it begins a big series against Toronto.
