Red Sox starting pitcher Kutter Crawford has been dealing with right patellar tendon soreness that dates back to last season.
Starter Brayan Bello, meanwhile, has been shut down for a few days because of shoulder soreness. But manager Alex Cora said it’s “nothing to be alarmed” about and he expects Bello to resume his throwing program Sunday or Monday.
“Kutter is a little bit behind,” Cora said here at JetBlue Park on Friday. “It’s been going on through the offseason. So he’s behind in his throwing program. I don’t know what that means as far as like a month and a half from now. But right now, he’s behind everybody else."
Crawford — who posted a 4.36 ERA in 33 starts last year — is throwing bullpen sessions. But Cora said “it’s not with the intensity of the other guys.”
“So have to make sure this feels good so this doesn’t suffer,” Cora said. “So we’re going to take it slow with him.”
Cora said it began bothering Crawford last season.
“He grinded through it,” Cora said. “The offseason was OK as far as the rehab. He had some good days and bad days. He’s been here for a while. He lives in the area. So that’s a good thing. People were able to treat him here. But it hasn’t kind of like gained momentum the right way.”
