The Red Sox received some more unfortunate injury news regarding their pitching staff Thursday.
Boston manager Alex Cora revealed that pitcher Lucas Giolito would begin the season on the injured list, according to The Boston Globe’s Julian McWilliams. Giolito joins Brayan Bello and Kutter Crawford as prospective starters who won’t be ready by Opening Day on March 27.
“We’re going to be tested right away,” Cora said.
The 30-year-old injured his hamstring in his first spring training start earlier this week. Cora initially hoped the right-hander would be ready for his first turn through the order, previously stating he would start during the second series of the season against the Baltimore Orioles.
Giolito threw again and felt fine after it was announced he’d be heading for the IL, per Rob Bradford of Audacy.

The Red Sox clearly want to be overly cautious with the veteran right-hander, who has yet to appear in a regular season game since signing a two-year deal before 2024. Boston has the depth to withstand recent injuries, but won’t have much more room if anything else pops up.
