Report: Eagles Could Sit Saquon Barkley Despite Being Close To NFL Record

There's a possibility that the Philadelphia Eagles rest star running back Saquon Barkley and the rest of their starters in Week 18 against the New York Giants if they know who they're going to play in the playoffs.

Report: Eagles Could Sit Saquon Barkley Despite Being Close To NFL Record

Schefter suggested that the Eagles could make sure that the Giants win that game and potentially not get the top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

"If the Eagles seed is in hand and there's nothing at stake, I would say they would not want to get Saquon the record because you know what, they would want to sit down, rest their players, and make sure the Giants win that last game so the Giants then fall from No. 1-2 to No. 7 and don't get their quarterback of the future," Schefter said.

The Giants are currently the favorite to get the No. 1 pick in the draft and will clinch it if they lose their last two games.

Barkley is closing on the NFL's single-season record and is 268 yards away from breaking it. After Sunday's game in Washington, one that the Eagles lost in the final seconds, 36-33, Barkley now has 1,838 rushing yards and is trying to break the record that Eric Dickerson set in 1984 with 2,105 yards.

The Eagles play the Cowboys and the Giants to end the season and while both don't have good defenses, there's still the possibility that Barkley doesn't play in Week 18 since the Eagles may know if they'll have the No. 1 or No. 2 seed.

A win for the Eagles in Week 17 against the Cowboys clinches them the NFC East and at least one playoff game at home. They can also clinch the division if the Commanders lose to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

Kickoff for Eagles-Cowboys will be at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. Joe Davis and Greg Olsen will have the call for FOX.
