The New York Jets’ next head coach reportedly will not be Rex Ryan.
Ryan, 62, has been vocal about wanting a chance to return. He interviewed with the team last week, but it could be one-and-done in terms of those chats.
According to SportsNet New York, the Jets are no longer pursuing Ryan as a candidate:

Mike Vrabel was the first candidate taken off the board in New York, but not by the team’s choice. The New England Patriots quickly hired him, a former player on the team, as their new head coach over the weekend.
Ryan would be the first interviewee reportedly out of the running that the Jets have said no to.
Ryan went 46-50 in six seasons as New York’s bench boss. He was previously employed by the Jets from 2009 to 2014, which included back-to-back trips to the AFC Championship in his first two seasons. That was the last time the team cracked the postseason.
Ryan has been an analyst for ESPN for the past several years. If it’s not landing the job in New York, he’ll likely continue there since he has not reportedly interviewed for other vacant positions around the NFL.
The Jets’ last head coach, Robert Saleh, was fired on Oct. 8. The team, 2-3 at the time, named Jeff Ulbrich the interim coach. It ended up with a 5-12 record.
Jets Wire will continue to provide updates on the team’s head coach search.
