The New York Jets have a host of decisions that must be made after a horror 2024 season that saw Robert Saleh fired, so too general manager Joe Dougles, plus the on-field struggles all point to an organization that is crying out for change.
Jets fans hope it begins now, and with the franchise interviewing numerous head coaches, things are starting to pick up steam. One name that has popped up for the job is former Jets coach Rex Ryan, who hasn't been shy about his want for the head coaching role.
And now he's taken it up a notch, virtually guaranteeing that he will be the Jets head coach in 2025. Rex spoke on ESPN New York's radio show "DiPietro & Rothenberg" and wasn't shy in stating why he thinks the job is his.
"Oh, 100%. Absolutely, I do," Ryan said. "And the reason I think I'm going to get it is because I'm the best guy for and it ain't close. The thing you have to do is, you have to connect with your football team, you have to connect with your fan base. The way they play, that's the most important thing. It's not just the Xs and Os and all that. This Ben Johnson [Detroit Lions offensive coordinator], I love him, I absolutely love him, but I'm a better candidate for this job than he would be."
Ryan is no stranger to the Jets organization, having already been the head coach for six years (2009-2014), so there is value in having someone come in who already has experience in dealing with this type of franchise.
But on the other side of the coin, getting a fresh face in the building, like a Ben Johnson or someone else might be just as beneficial to the organization and that is something that Woody Johnson will have to think about over the next week or so.
There are plenty of good head coaching candidates out there for the Jets, but apparently none better than Rex Ryan.
