Robert Griffin II believes Trey Lance breakout season could come with Cowboys

Will Lance finally figure it out?

Los Angeles Chargers v Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys may have the most talked about QB3 in the league in former No. 3 pick Trey Lance. The North Dakota State star once again showed fans all of the mouthwatering highs and abysmal lows he brings to the table.

Lance may have led the preseason in total yards piled up, but he did throw five interceptions in his final game and struggled with accuracy. He will once again be the No. 3 quarterback behind Cooper Rush. Still, supporters like Robert Griffin III believe the turnaround is right around the corner.

Griffin, speaking in an exclusive interview with FanSided, counts himself among Lance's biggest remaining supporters. Griffin, a very mobile quarterback in his day who loved throwing deep, believes that the Cowboys and NFL as a whole will keep working to make Lance a success for as long as possible.

"Trey Lance is a guy they won't give up on, he's younger than Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr," Griffin III said in an interview with Stacking the Box. "It's the same reason you don't give up on [Steelers QB] Justin Fields...how many quarterbacks do you know that can do what Trey Lance did on that run? Not many." Griffin also believes many NFL executives share his viewpoint.

Robert Griffin III believes Trey Lance can still be a solid quarterback

Griffin's take makes sense in that it's much more enticing to bet on a player with Lance's athletic gifts and strong arm. He is still a young quarterback, and his combination of physical skills could lead to him eventually flipping the lightswitch that makes him look like a No. 3 overall pick.

While Griffin was quick to write off those five interceptions as developmental bumps in the road, it's also worth pointing out Lance is in his fourth season. CJ Stroud, Trevor Lawrence, and Brock Purdy all have fewer seasons of professional experience than him, yet they are quality starting quarterbacks.

The question for Dallas is how much time and energy they are willing to spend into turning Lance around. If, like the 49ers, they get frustrated and kick him to the side, it would take a very optimistic GM with RG3's exact mindset for him to get a worthwhie backup job.
