Major League Baseball today announced the rosters for the “Spring Breakout” contests that match the top minor leaguers in team’s farm systems against each other. The Cubs team will feature top prospects like right-hander Cade Horton, catcher Moises Ballesteros and infielder James Triantos.
Spring Breakout is a four-day event taking place from March 13 through March 16 at the Spring Training stadiums in Florida and Arizona. It’s a way to showcase the next generation of talent in MLB, as each team is made up solely of minor leaguers.
What’s exciting about these games is that the roster is made up of a mix of players from all levels of the minors. For some of the players taken in last year’s draft, this will be the first chance we get to see them in a Cubs uniform for most of us.
This is the second year that MLB is doing a Spring Breakout, but unfortunately last year’s Cubs’ contest against the White Sox was rained out. So the Cubs are making up for lost time with two games—one on March 13 against the Dodgers at Camelback Ranch and another one against the Angels on March 15 at Sloan Park. Both games will be played at 8:05 Central time. These games will be taking place while the major leaguers are over in Japan, so the minor leaguers will have the run of the place.
Both games will be available to watch for free on MLB.tv and the MLB dot com website and the app. The game against the Angels will also be on the MLB Network and Marquee+.
Here is the Cubs preliminary roster for the Spring Breakout games. This is subject to change and the Cubs will certainly switch in a different group of pitchers for the Angels game.
