Entering the 2024 NBA Draft tonight, there have been plenty of rumors about the Dallas Mavericks.
Dallas has reportedly shown interest in drafting Bronny James, and they've been linked in trade rumors for Jerami Grant and Quentin Grimes.
The Mavs are actively trying to trade Tim Hardaway Jr., and there has even been chatter that there is already a deal on the table, but their biggest priority remains the same.
Rumors: Mavericks interested in Naji Marshall if they don't re-sign Derrick Jones Jr.
Dallas wants to re-sign Derrick Jones Jr.
Mavs GM Nico Harrison listed that as the Mavs' main priority this summer, and it's definitely fitting due to the impact he had last season. Jones Jr. turned into Dallas' everyday starting wing, and his defensive impact was excellent.
During the playoffs, Jones Jr. averaged 9.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks per game while shooting 36.9 percent from downtown, and he took his play to the next level when the Mavs needed him most.
But there's always a chance he goes elsewhere. Although the Mavs are trying to free up cap space to pay Jones Jr. more, he could decide to sign with a different team (although this seems unlikely). Jones Jr. wants to return to the Mavs, but anything can happen in the NBA and things change quickly.
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Mavs would be interested in signing Naji Marshall if they are unable to re-sign Jones Jr. Marshall would be a strong alternative if they do lose Jones Jr., and he had a strong season for the New Orleans Pelicans last season.
Marshall averaged 7.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 0.7 steals per game while shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 38.7 percent from downtown, and he'd be an interesting fit if the Mavs pursue him.
Marshall is a big-bodied wing who plays with energy, knocks down open shots, and works extremely hard. He may not be the same defender that Jones Jr. is, but he'd provide similar energy and better shooting.
Marshall was a fan favorite in New Orleans, and he could have the opportunity to be that once again in Dallas.
For all the latest news and rumors on Derrick Jones Jr. and the Dallas Mavericks this summer, stay tuned.
