Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson is not expected to play against the Denver Broncos, sources told PennLive. While Wilson did travel with the team and will warmup to test his calf pregame, the Steelers intend to start Justin Fields for a second straight game.
Fields led the Steelers to an 18-10 win over the Atlanta Falcons, though the offense did not score a touchdown. He was 17 of 23 for 156 yards and added 57 yards on 14 rushes on the ground.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin hinted on Friday that Fields would start with the team listing Wilson as questionable on the injury report. On Tuesday, he said the team was preparing for Fields to start.
"We’re preparing as if Justin is going to be our quarterback. I think that’s an appropriate way to do it. Speculation is a waste of time. Russell’s hurt. He’s not available to us,” Tomlin said.
Wilson re-injured his calf just three days before the Steelers faced the Falcons. He first injured the calf at the beginning of training camp. Wilson said this week that he was ‘getting closer’, but he had to be 100 percent before he and the doctors would clear his return.
