The New Orleans Saints are coming off a very disappointing 2024 season, in. which they accumulated a 5-12 record and finished fourth in the NFC South.
There's a lot of uncertainty entering the offseason, as they currently have the least amount of cap space entering 2025 of any team, at $-51 million.
To get out of that situation, drastic measures will likely need to be taken, and that's why Bradley Locker of Pro Football Focus lists defensive end Cameron Jordan as a potential cut candidate, who's currently under a two-year $27.9 million deal.
"The 2024 season didn’t go as planned for the franchise legend, who finished with a 54.3 PFF pass-rushing grade and a career-worst 54.4 PFF run-defense grade," he wrote . "Jordan was effectively relegated to backup duties behind Carl Granderson and Chase Young, too. Cutting Jordan after June 1 would save $11 million, as opposed to costing the Saints roughly $3 million if moving on before then."
His production in 2024 was extremely limited, accumulating 34 tackles, seven tackles for loss, four sacks, eight quarterback hits, 12 pressures and four quarterback knockdowns.
Jordan's release could also just be speeding up the inevitable. 2025 is his last year under contract with the team, and by the time the season ends, he will be 36 years old, so it's unclear if the Saints would be interested in bringing him back.
If this move does become a reality, though, Jordan will have enjoyed an amazing 14-year career with New Orleans, making eight Pro Bowls, one First-Team All-Pro and being the team's all-time sack leader (121.5).
