Saints All-Pro Gives Bleak Update on Future NFL Plans

Eight-time Pro Bowler Cameron Jordan has been a fixture on the New Orleans Saints defensive line for over a decade, but that could change in 2025. While he is under contract for the upcoming season, the one-time All-Pro acknowledged he could be in his final stretch with the team. While he was one of the most dominant pass rushers in the league at his peak, the 35-year-old has slowed down in recent years. Entering Sunday’s action, Jordan has recorded just five sacks over the past two seasons.

During a recent interview with Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football, Jordan said that he plans to play in 2025, although he acknowledged that his opportunity to see the field might not come with the Saints. This is the first time he’s publicly admitted to being a potential cut, and it could signal teams across the league to start looking into whether or not he could be a fit in a new organization.

Cameron Jordan Won’t Commit to Saints Return In 2025

As of this posting, Cameron Jordan is under contract for the 2025 season. However, nobody should be surprised if New Orleans cuts bait with the veteran during the offseason. As mentioned above, Jordan hasn’t played up to his previous standard, which means his salary doesn’t reflect his on-field ability. The former first-round pick carries a $20.6 million cap hit next year, but only $1.5 million in guarantees. While there are some void years added to the end of his deal, the Saints could still cut him and save cap space.

Some teams can afford to overpay an established veteran like Cameron Jordan, but the Saints are not one of them. As is common with General Manager Mickey Loomis, the team is dramatically over the projected salary cap and must make some difficult decisions before the start of the league year. Cutting Jordan is one of the easiest ways to save some much-needed cash, so his days with the Saints are likely done.

While his time with the Saints may be all but over, Jordan’s time in the NFL shouldn’t be. The California product isn’t a starting-caliber player anymore, but he could be a reliable rotational option for the following teams in 2025.

Possible Destinations

The Carolina Panthers have a functioning offense, so now it’s time to fix their defense. While Bryce Young and company are no longer the worst passing attack in the league, they’re not good enough to overcome an untalented defense. Jadeveon Clowney could not adequately replace Brian Burns, and while A’Shawn Robinson and D.J. Wonnum are fine players, they’re not stars. Cameron Jordan isn’t a star anymore, but it can’t hurt to add another body to keep everyone fresh.

The Baltimore Ravens believe in having a rotating group of reliable pass rushers. They haven’t been able to do that in 2024, as Kyle Van Noy and former first-round pick Odafe Oweh are the only reliable edge defenders on the roster. Cameron Jordan probably won’t find a starting job on the open market, but he could be an adequate third option for this defense. Additionally, he should welcome the opportunity to play for a strong coaching staff like John Harbaugh’s.

Miami, meanwhile, tried to buy low on a once-great pass rusher when they signed Shaq Barrett in the offseason. While that move didn’t work out, they could go back to the same well in 2025. The Dolphins don’t have that much projected cap space, so they’ll need to make low-risk, medium-reward signings hoping to catch lightning in a bottle if they want to topple the Buffalo Bills in the AFC.
