The New Orleans Saints are not settled when it comes to their current roster. They've had their radar beeping consistently when it comes to the free agency market. Kellen Moore's squad is bringing back an offensive piece with experience playing in New Orleans.
Saints bring back OL Shane Lemieux
According to reports, the Saints are signed free agent offensive lineman Shane Lemieux. Lemieux started four games on the interior for the Saints last season. He began his NFL career with the New York Giants.
Trevor Penning's role has been adjusted this season. He has moved inside to guard and received rave reviews from his teammates following the transition. They believe that Penning will resurrect his career at guard due to his skillset. Bringing in Lemieux could be valuable for Penning, since the veteran lineman has played across the interior of the OL so far his in his pro career.
Penning had bright moments last year, but his consistency has been the biggest issue so far in his pro career. The Saints are hoping that a move inside will help him limit the reps where he gets beat by finesse and speed. No one is going to outmuscle him on a normal basis.
Lemieux will likely compete for a depth spot along the OL for Moore's team. They brought in Will Clapp as a fellow depth interior player who can play guard or center. That versatility can be important, especially when you consider how many OL injuries that Saints have dealt with in recent seasons.
Kyle Hergel also figures to compete for backup jobs along the interior. Cesar Ruiz and Erik McCoy are set to reprise their starting roles alongside Penning. Taliese Fuaga and Kelvin Banks Jr. are expected to start at offensive tackle.
