The New Orleans Saints are in Top-30 draft visit season.
According to a league source, one prospect set to come in for a closer look is Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers. The visit is expected for mid-April. The Saints have shown a considerable amount of interest in him, visiting with Ewers at the NFL Combine as well.
"Everyone does homework every year," head coach Kellen Moore said at Tuesday morning's annual league meeting when asked about quarterback. "It's a valuable position."
While New Orleans is doing their homework like everyone else, he reiterated that Derek Carr is their starter and that they feel great about him. He also had some pretty good hopes for Spencer Rattler developing as he enters his second season. Moore said that the second offseason can be a big jump for Rattler and mentioned that most players are swimming in their first year.
On the possibility of drafting a quarterback, Moore also mentioned that patience had to be there for selecting someone and that he'll never say never when it comes to competitions for the backup spot. He also said that the age of quarterbacks peaking is a little later, but has an obvious passion for the spot.
"I'm a quarterback guy," Moore said on Tuesday. During the scouting process, there were a couple of players the Saints went visit with and see in person that were in their process. He stressed the importance of getting classroom time with them.
Ewers was a part of a group of Longhorns players who had dinner with the Saints recently. He projects as an early Day 3 pick currently, going as high as the fourth round. The San Antonio-born quarterback just turned 22 in mid-March.
Ewers went 27-9 while at Texas, with records of 11-3 and 10-2 over the past two seasons. His final year with the Longhorns saw him finish 293/44 (65.8%) for 3,472 yards with 31 touchdowns and 12 picks. He finished on the Second-Team All-SEC last season.
