It's well past time to admit this isn't working out.
The New Orleans Saints lost their fourth straight game and it's become crystal clear that Saints fans no longer want to see Dennis Allen coaching their team. Near the end of the Saints' eventual blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Katherine Terrell of ESPN noted that a new nickname was given to Allen.
Terrell said that someone referred to Allen as "Dennis the Menace" and said that it's time for him to go. Clearly this had been repeated throughout the game because she notes that originally she couldn't figure out what was being said but then said "that was loud and clear".
Allen was hired as the Saints head coach in the 2022 offseason after Sean Payton stepped away from football. The hire made sense at the time considering how good of a job Allen had done with the defense during his time as the defensive coordinator but it's clear he's not the right guy to run this team.
After a 2-0 start, the Saints have lost four straight games and this most recent loss was beyond embarrassing. New Orleans' defense gave up 594 yards to the Bucs offense and that was the second-most yards given up in a game in Saints history.
Saints fans have seen enough of Dennis Allen
Since Allen was hired in 2022, he's gone an underwhelming 18-22 and the Saints have not been a legitimate threat in the NFC South during his time with the team. Sure they finished with a winning record in 2023, but that was thanks to a great run in the final few weeks of the season after not doing much of anything for the rest of the year. They also missed out on the playoffs despite having a winning record.
It's not uncommon for people to make a great coordinator but to absolutely stink it up as a head coach and Allen falls into that category. He's an excellent defensive coordinator but has now had two shots at being a head coach and has underwhelmed both times.
Maybe the Saints front office doesn't kick him to the curb quite yet but one would have to think that if the Saints continue to look lackluster that it'll be time to make the switch and go in a different direction.
