FRISCO - The New Orleans Saints coaching staff, in the process of being assembled. has a definitive Dallas Cowboys flavor.
The Saints have hired themselves a quarterbacks coach … and it is a guy who has built his reputation in part on having been Dak Prescott’s QB coach here at The Star,
As first noted by Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, New Orleans is hiring Scott Tolzien for the role as a top aide to new Saints head coach Kellen Moore.
Tolzien, 37, previously worked with new Saints boss Moore here with the Cowboys.
Tolzien - a Mike McCarthy guy - was a coaching assistant here with the Cowboys from 2020 to 2022 when Moore was Dallas’ offensive coordinator.
Tolzien worked as the Cowboys’ quarterbacks coach for the last two seasons while Moore - having been nudged out of the building - served as coordinator of the Chargers and Eagles.
By the way, another ex-QB and former Dallas staffer in Doug Nussmeier is expected to be the Saints coordinator.,
Tolzien entered the league in 2011 as an undrafted QB out of Wisconsin, spending time with the Chargers, 49ers, Packers, and Colts.
That time in Green Bay has served as the foundation for his coaching career.
As a player? He appeared in 10 career games with four starts, completing 60.3 percent of his passes for 1,065 yards with two touchdowns and nine interceptions.
But as a coach? He made an impression on ex-Cowboys boss McCarthy in their Green Bay days …. an impression that now continues on in The Big East under Kellen Moore.
