Saints make no-brainer QB cut after drafting Tyler Shough

We knew it was coming.

The 2025 NFL Draft has come and gone and the New Orleans Saints made headlines when they drafted Tyler Shough in the second round. The Louisville quarterback had been rising up draft boards but no one expected him to go ahead of Shedeur Sanders.

The Saints clearly saw something in Shough that they liked, especially considering their situation at quarterback. Derek Carr might not be able to play in 2025 so it was either Spencer Rattler be the starter or the Saints draft a quarterback. Rattler could still end up being the starter but Shough gives the Saints an option for the future.

As for the other quarterbacks on the roster, sacrifices had to be made with the addition of Shough. That sacrifice was Ben DiNucci, who was cut by the Saints on Tuesday. DiNucci announced the news on social media, stating, "The NFL is a tough business. Always has been and always will be. Got released by the Saints this morning. Control what I can control and go back to work." The post ends with a hang loose emoji.

Saints release Ben DiNucci after adding Tyler Shough to roster

This isn't any sort of surprise for Saints fans. Carr, Rattler, and Shough aren't going anywhere for now and keeping Jake Haener makes sense if Carr can't end up playing this year because he gives them a third-string option. DiNucci was signed as the fourth option for training camp and preseason but once Shough was drafted, that spelled doom for the journeyman quarterback.

DiNucci wasn't a terrible option to bring in as a fourth-string quarterback. He's bounced around the league since 2020, appearing in three games for the Cowboys that year. Since then, he's spent time with the Broncos, Bills, and Saints, not appearing in a game for any of them.

Shough will have a shot to compete for the starting quarterback job and it'll be interesting to see how everything shakes out at that position.
