After the news of former Saints QB Derek Carr retiring due to injuries, New Orleans DE Cameron Jordan recently expressed his desire for the team to reunite with Giants QB Jameis Winston.
Despite the vocal advice from their 15-year veteran, Josina Anderson reports the Saints are not expected to pursue Winston and will instead move forward with their young options.
The Saints are currently entering their offseason program, with fourth-round QB Tyler Shough competing with Spencer Rattler for the starting job.
Winston, 31, is a former first-overall pick of the Buccaneers back in 2015. He played out the 2019 season under the fifth-year option from his rookie contract and made a base salary of $20.922 million.
He signed with the Saints on a one-year, $1.1 million deal in 2020 and returned to New Orleans on another one-year contract worth up to $12 million in 2021 as the starter. He unfortunately tore his ACL after eight games.
The Saints re-signed him to a two-year deal with a maximum value of $28 million and reworked the deal in 2023. The Browns signed Winston to a one-year deal with a maximum value of $8.7 million last March.
In 2024, Winston appeared in 12 games for the Browns with seven starts, completing 61.1 percent of his passes for 2,121 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He added 25 rush attempts for 83 yards and another touchdown.
The New Orleans Saints have had a busy offseason. They have a new head coach in Kellen Moore. Veteran quarterback Derek Carr retired. Justin Reid joined the secondary as a proven talent.
The quarterback competition rages on as they look for their Carr replacement, too. Rookie QB Tyler Shough is in the mix to win the job after getting selected with the 40th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. New Orleans still needs to get something done with the young passer, though.
Quarterback Tyler Shough remains the only rookie for the Saints that hasn't inked his rookie contract with the team yet. That should not be a surprise, though. Spotract notes that most of the 2025 second-round picks have not been signed as of yet.
Those second-rounders are annually the toughest deals to get done around the league. Agents and players want to find the best deal for themselves, and the teams tend to wait around when it comes to budging on the contracts details.
For Shough, this contract situation hasn't affected him one bit. He's been practicing at every turn for New Orleans, and the team has had positive things to say about him and his work ethic so far. Everyone involved seem confident that this will all work out in the long run.
We will see if Shough can win the QB competition to start for New Orleans to begin the season.
For other rookies, their contract situations have put a cloud of doubt over them as they enter the pros. That's not the case for the rookie QB for the Saints.
That's a norm across the board in the NFL, as the young players and their agents want to find the best deal for them. At the same time, they want to get a contract done that the team appreciates and believes makes sense as well.
