The New Orleans Saints continue to build out their defensive staff.
From ESPN's Pete Thamel on Tuesday afternoon , the team is hiring California Golden Bears defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon to be their new linebackers coach. The report was also confirmed by NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill.
Kellen Moore's staff continues to be very intriguing, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. In the past week, New Orleans named Brandon Staley as their defensive coordinator and hired Terry Joseph to be their defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator.
As for Peter Sirmon, who just turned 48, he's been a coach in college since 2008 when he got his start with Central Washington as a linebackers coach. He's been with Cal since 2018, and had stops along the way in Oregon, Tennessee, Washington, USC, Mississippi State and USC. You could say the linebacker room is in his DNA.
We wait to see whether or not the Saints transition to a 3-4. The team lost Michael Hodges to the Cincinnati Bengals earlier this month, and most every coach on that side of the ball has moved on.
