Just like many others this Wednesday morning, New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is praying for everyone affected by a deadly attack in the French Quarter.
On early Wednesday morning, a man intentionally drove his pickup truck into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. According to reports, 10 people were killed and 30 others were injured in this awful attack. After the driver crashed their truck, they started firing shots at police officers. The officers had no choice but to return fire. New Orleans Police Superintendent Anna Kirkpatrick said, "This man was trying to run over as many people as he could. It was not a DUI situation." Multiple news outlets in Louisiana are reporting that the suspect responsible for this senseless act of violence is dead.
"The fact that this individual is dead doesn’t mean that there won’t be intense investigation to find out how it happened," former NOPD Chief Ronal Serpas said.
While the country waits for more details, Carr made it clear that he'll keep everyone in New Orleans in his thoughts and prayers. The starting quarterback for the Saints shared his brief thoughts on social media.
"Praying for New Orleans," Carr wrote on X. "Woke up and saw the news this morning."
The Sugar Bowl will be played this evening at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. This College Football Playoff quarterfinal won't be postponed despite what went down in the French Quarter.
"The Sugar Bowl Committee is devastated by the terrible events from early this morning," Sugar Bowl chief executive officer Jeff Hundley said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. We are in ongoing discussions with authorities on the local, state, and federal levels and will communicate further details as they become available."
Notre Dame and Georgia will kick off the Sugar Bowl at 8:45 p.m. ET. As for the Saints, they'll actually be on the road this Sunday. Their regular-season finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be played at Raymond James Stadium.
