The New Orleans Saints have a task on their hands that could help determine who starts the season at quarterback for Kellen Moore's team. Depending on the outcome, Spencer Rattler could garner an upper hand to win the QB battle for the black and gold.
Tyler Shough's contract and training camp
The NFL is going through a unique situation regarding players selected in round two of the 2025 NFL Draft. Just 2 of 32 have been signed to their rookie contract, following the Houston Texans' decision to sign the first pick of round two (WR Jayden Higgins) to a fully-guaranteed deal. Carson Schwesinger, the second pick of round two, was given the same.
Past that, there is unknown. That mystery includes Saints rookie QB Tyler Shough, who was picked 40th overall in this year's draft. He's been a part of OTAs and worked out with his teammates during time away from the team, but attendance at training camp without a deal done is a huge question mark.
Players report to training camp on July 22nd. There's less than a week to get a contract done between the Saints and their young QB, who needs the reps to build bonds with his new teammates - as he tries to win the starting job.
An advantage for Spencer Rattler
As for the other potential starter for New Orleans, Spencer Rattler recently had a workout with some pass catchers on the team. He missed a throwing sessions a little earlier in the offseason because he was hosting his annual youth camp.
If Shough does have to miss time due to his contract situation, that would immediately give Rattler an upper hand since he would be practicing with the first-team unit and furthering his relationships with the new coaching staff.
Only time will tell how this all shakes out, but this is an unprecedented hurdle for these young players and teams around the league as training camp quickly approaches.
