The New Orleans Saints are currently without a star player as practice begins to take a step forward in the offseason. On-field workouts have begun to increase, but Alvin Kamara is not with the team for now.
Alvin Kamara working out away from team
This is not a special development due to any staff changes, contract negotiations, or any other factor regarding the organization. In reality, this is an annual move by Kamara.
The star running back normally works out on his own during this portion of the offseason, before returning to the Saints later in the process.
For Kellen Moore, this could throw a small curveball into his preparations for this season, but it is nothing he shouldn't be able to push through, considering how involved Kamara will be during training camp and the preseason. There's every expectation he will be back for those pieces of prep.
Regardless, Moore is running practices without one of his top offensive weapons. That means that other running back options are receiving more touches, more opportunities, and more learning at OTAs.
As New Orleans attempts to find their starting quarterback for Week 1, these practices do hold more water for the offense than sometimes in years before or for other teams currently.
We will see when exactly Kamara returns to the fold. That will be another stepping stone for Moore's first season as he works the veteran RB back into drills and practice. Who will be his QB for a bulk of those drills? That remains to be seen.
