Saints rookie QB Tyler Shough proves he can do what Derek Carr never seemed to in New Orleans during the offseason

Tyler Shough was Kellen Moore and the New Orleans Saints' guy in the 2025 NFL Draft class. They selected him with the 40th overall selection, and he's knee-deep in a quarterback competition for Moore's offense. Spencer Rattler is the other QB in contention for the job as of now.

Shough is putting in some notable extra work with his receivers, according to recent reports.

Tyler Shough's offseason workouts could pay off

The rookie recently noted that he has been planning to work out with Saints receivers during the slow portion of the offseason ahead of training camp for New Orleans. That has come to fruition, as Shough, along with other QBs, worked with wideouts earlier this week in Beaverton.

Brandin Cooks has bought in, considering his involvement here. It would be easy for the veteran wide receiver to take this time off, but he is putting work in with the first-year QB instead.

“For me, I know the window of opportunity is only so big for anybody,” Shough said. “You have to come in and be prepared. Now that we’ve got the playbook installed … I just want to continue to grow and then attack training camp. -- Tyler Shough via Matthew Paras

Shough is clearly determined to develop strong relationships with his pass catchers, and even offensive lineman - like Cesar Ruiz - have taken notice of his talent and work ethic.

Derek Carr's time in New Orleans

Carr's tenure with the Saints was not a preferable one when it came to the fan base. Carr felt a bit disconnected throughout his time in New Orleans, and that became clear early on.

Many fans felt like Carr did not fully appreciate the city he was playing in, and they also thought he did not consistently take blame when necessary. Teammates got visually frustrated with the veteran quarterback at times, but it was always seemingly pushed under the rug.

Meanwhile, Carr had multiple outbursts in game side to frustration that were met with ridicule from fans. The offseason never seemed to have these sort of optional workouts between Carr and his pass catchers. The young QB in New Orleans now is changing that sort of narrative as the potential starter.

Shough's move as a rookie to value his relationships with his teammates, young and old, could be extremely refreshing for his fan base. We will see if that training helps him land the starting role for Kellen Moore's offense this season.
