The New Orleans Saints' offense looks like a disaster right now and it all stems around the quarterback position.
The Saints could be without Derek Carr for the season due to an injury and they opted to draft injury-prone prospect Tyler Shough to replace him. Shough might not be ready to start right away, but he's definitely not going to find success if the Saints don't add a wide receiver or two ahead of the season.
Right now, the Saints have Chris Olave, but not much else besides him. Even Olave has a history of concussions that make him a bit of a question mark, too. This wide receiver core won't be enough for Shough to find success in the NFL.
The Saints should take a chance on newly released wide receiver Gabe Davis, formerly of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jacksonville opted to release Davis on Wednesday morning after one season with the team.
Davis recorded 20 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games for the Jaguars. Before that, he recorded nearly 3,000 yards and 27 touchdowns in four years with the Buffalo Bills.
Davis is still just 26 years old and has a lot of talent. The Saints could sign him on an affordable deal in free agency now that he sits there waiting to be signed. It would certainly be an upgrade for their offense.
He's right around Shough's age, so there's potential for the duo to grow together in the NFL, too.
New Orleans Saints Could Target $13 Million Wide Receiver
The New Orleans Saints may finally add to their wide receiver room.
The Jacksonville Jaguars released wide receiver Gabe Davis on Wednesday. This release comes as a surprise with Davis finishing just one year of his three-year $39 Million contract.
Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis mentioned post-draft that the team was interested in adding a big-body wide receiver in the draft but didn't like their options down the board. While the team did add veteran Brandin Cooks earlier in the offseason, the team needs a bigger red zone threat.
Now that the draft has wrapped up, there remain a plethora of options for New Orleans to target. The Saints have been linked to veterans Keenan Allen and Amari Cooper due to their history with head coach Kellen Moore, but Gabe Davis becomes an intriguing name now that he's available.
Davis had his worst season as a pro with the Jaguars, appearing in 10 games and catching 20 passes for 239 yards and 2 touchdowns. The former UCF wideout had 2,730 yards during his four seasons with the Buffalo Bills.
The 6-foot-2 and 210-pound wide receiver immediately adds size to the wide receiver room in New Orleans, which there's a severe lack thereof. Davis has high-level ball tracking and high-point skills, making him a threat in the red zone.
Davis also possesses underrated speed. While running a very average 4.54 40-yard dash at the combine in 2020, his game speed is much quicker. Davis has an unexpected burst and is a sufficient vertical threat.
The Saints are expected to start a young quarterback in 2025. Whether it's Spencer Rattler or Tyler Shough, they'll need to add a safety net big body wide receiver to make life easier for their young signal caller. Gabe Davis has the tools to be a solid option for the team going forward and at 26 years old, can be part of the team's near future.
