Saints Urged to Sign Former Bills WR Ahead of Training Camp

During the 2024 season, the Buffalo Bills made an interesting trade, sending a 2025 third-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for wide receiver Amari Cooper.

In eight games with the Bills, Cooper brought in 20 receptions for 297 yards and two touchdowns.

Cooper’s short time in Buffalo was a little underwhelming, and now he remains a free agent heading into training camp.

Many NFL teams have decided to pass on signing Cooper this offseason, but that doesn’t mean a team still can’t sign him before the start of the preseason.

Many NFL teams will be looking to upgrade their receiving corps heading into training camp, and one team that could be looking to add a veteran receiver is the New Orleans Saints.

The Saints Urged To Sign Amari Cooper

The Saints have had a challenging offseason, with quarterback Derek Carr retiring at the start of May. Now, it will be up to young quarterbacks Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler to step up.

Shough and Rattler are going to need as many great receivers around them to succeed this season, and Bob Rose from Saints Wire thinks New Orleans should try to sign Cooper.

“The Saints have already visited with Davis, who has some other interest around the league. Most expected New Orleans to pursue Allen or Cooper because they each played for Moore, but the Saints have shown no interest in either thus far,” Rose wrote. “New Orleans might be counting on second-year wideout Bub Means or newly-signed Donovan Peoples-Jones to step up as the possession receiver out of this group. Starters Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed are an explosive tandem, but the Saints may still look to add quality depth with Davis or another signing.”

It makes sense for the Saints to try to sign Cooper. New Orleans needs veteran help on the offensive line, and there is no better player to sign right now than Cooper.

Cooper has spent ten seasons in the NFL and can bring all the lessons he learned in the league and share them with the young players on the Saints.

Cooper’s Time With The Bills Was Too Short

There is an excellent chance that Cooper’s best days are behind him, but the Saints don’t need him to be a star.

New Orleans is expected to be one of the worst teams in the NFL this season, and this year should be about maintaining the culture under first-year head coach Kellen Moore and supporting the young quarterbacks.

Cooper has been an excellent leader and culture guy throughout his NFL career, so why not bring him in and see all the good work he can do in a locker room?

It stinks that Cooper’s time with the Bills was so short, but hopefully, he lands on his feet and still gets to play a few more years in the NFL.

The Saints open the 2025 regular season at home again against the Arizona Cardinals on September 7th, so Cooper may be on the field playing in his 11th NFL season.
