San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy Has Thrown 7 Interceptions In 2 Practices

Padded practice has not been the remedy for the offense that San Francisco 49ers’ head coach Kyle Shanahan thought it would be. Quarterback Brock Purdy has thrown seven interceptions in his previous two practices, the first two practices in pads for this year’s training camp.

According to Matt Barrows with The Athletic, Purdy was picked off three times on Monday:

The quarterback’s first red-zone throw came after he had scrambled to his left away from pressure. Purdy tried to throw across his body to new tight end Logan Thomas, but the ball deflected off Thomas’ chest plate and was grabbed out of the air by linebacker Fred Warner. Later, safety George Odum jumped in front of a throw to Deebo Samuel Sr. for another interception in the end zone.

Purdy also was picked off once in a non-red zone situation. He tried to lead tight end Brayden Willis with a deep throw down the sideline. Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir, however, had plenty of time to read the play, peel off of his opponent and make a diving grab for the takeaway.

Monday was not a great start to the week, but Prdy followed it up on Tuesday with a worse performance. Purdy’s practice was more reminiscent of his performance against the Baltimore Ravens on Thanksgiving last season.

According to Sterling Bennett with 957 The Game, Purdy looked sharp to start practice. However, he threw four picks in his last five tries:

Brock Purdy started off incredible then ended up throwing 4 interceptions in his last 5 passes Intensity was ultra high today. A lot of explosive plays from the offense – through the air and ground – and a lot of takeaways from the defense.

The third-year quarterback is in a pivotal year in San Francisco. If Purdy plays close to how he played last year when he led the 49ers to an NFC Championship, the former seventh-round pick could become one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league before Week 1 of the 2025 regular season.

The San Francisco 49ers had some starters out

How Purdy does this in training camp and the regular season could be dependent on the talent around him. Barrows pointed out that Purdy struggled when the 49ers had several starters off the field for various reasons:

Two starters, receiver Brandon Aiyuk and left tackle Trent Williams, are holding out of training camp practices while four others — Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Kyle Juszczyk and Jake Brendel — were held out of team situations on Monday as part of their maintenance routine.

The 49ers had to shed talent this offseason because of cap issues. One would assume it would be hard for them to keep the names mentioned above if they give Purdy $55-65 million next year.

How good would he be, then?
