The San Francisco 49ers selected Arizona wide receiver Jacob Cowing 135th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and one of his teammate thinks he could improve in his second season.
Niners superstar tight end George Kittle was at the Dwight Clark legacy event in San Jose on Wednesday, where he talked a bit about the state of the team. According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, the veteran said that Cowing has bulked up quite a bit since he was drafted.
When he was taken in the fourth round by San Francisco, he was listed at 5-8, and only weighed 168 pounds. But according to Kittle, he has gained some weight. If that is true, the smallish receiver could contribute a bit more in sophomore season.
Cowing was mainly the team's punt returner in 2024, returning 28 kicks for 245 yards. On the offensive side, he grabbed four receptions for 80 yards, as he was seen as a big-play threat when he was on the field.
He can definitely contribute on the outside, and that is evidenced by the fact that he racked up 1,882 yards and 20 touchdowns in his two seasons at Arizona. One of those seasons, he led the Pac-12 Conference in receptions with 85.
The 49ers traded away star wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders earlier this offseason, so the team could be looking for guys like Cowing to step up and make an impact when they are called upon.
