Schefter provides recovery update, potential return timeline for 49ers' Brandon Aiyuk

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has been the subject of significant trade speculation, especially with his $22.85 million roster bonus due on April 1. However, the recovery from a major knee injury complicates matters—Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL and MCL in October. As a result, he isn't expected to be ready for the start of the season, which impacts his trade value.

ESPN's Adam Schefter recently provided an update on Aiyuk's recovery and a potential timeline for his return. He also offered some insights into the 49ers' decision-making process and any potential trade interest (h/t to Kyle Madson of Niners Wire).

On his podcast, Schefter noted that despite conflicting reports about teams reaching out, there hasn't been significant trade interest in Aiyuk. The combination of his contract and injury concerns has made teams hesitant.

"Nobody wants to take on the contract when you don't know when the guy is going to be healthy again this season," Schefter said. "But from what I understand, Dr. Neal ElAttrache is pleased with his progress. He's coming along."

Schefter shared a rough timeline for Aiyuk's potential return to the field.

"I would think he's ready to play by mid-season, and there might be a team out there that is willing to basically not give up very much to get a great player who's coming off the injury.

"But the point is, if that trade doesn't materialize by Tuesday of next week, it's not happening at all because the 49ers aren't going to pay a $23 million roster bonus, and then wind up dealing him this summer before the trade deadline. Just not going to happen."

The 49ers have already traded Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders this offseason, leaving Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall as the projected Week 1 starters. The team also signed Demarcus Robinson and is widely expected to draft another receiver next month.

For now, Schefter's best guess is that Aiyuk remains with the 49ers for the 2025 season.
