Sean Payton Weighs Free Agency Options for Broncos

As the Denver Broncos prepare for the 2025 league year, head coach Sean Payton has remained characteristically tight-lipped about the team's offseason strategy.

However, his interview yesterday provided some insight into the direction Denver may take in free agency.

General manager George Paton projects up to $52 million in salary cap space following potential roster adjustments, so the Broncos have the financial flexibility to address key needs.

A significant concern remains the offensive skill positions, particularly running back and wide receiver. Payton has acknowledged that Denver struggled to find consistency in the backfield, making an addition at running back a priority.

Veteran Aaron Jones, now 30, could provide an immediate boost, especially given his fit within Payton’s offensive scheme.

At receiver, Tee Higgins headlines the free-agent class, but the Cincinnati Bengals will apply the franchise tag, limiting Denver’s options.

Other notable names, like Chris Godwin and Stefon Diggs, have durability concerns, while Keenan Allen's age (33) raises questions about longevity. The Broncos may instead opt for value signings or target playmakers in the draft.

Denver’s cap space also allows for potential upgrades along the offensive line and in the kicking game, areas Payton has emphasized as critical to the team’s success.

Defensively, key contributors such as defensive tackle D.J. Jones and linebacker Cody Barton are set to hit free agency, requiring the Broncos to balance retaining talent with acquiring fresh contributors.

While Payton has been reluctant to outline specifics, he remains focused on reshaping the roster for sustained success.

“Obviously, we're still not there yet,” Payton admitted (h/t ESPN). “But we’re a lot closer than we were.” As Denver seeks to climb into playoff contention, Payton’s roster moves in the coming weeks will be pivotal.
