Season-ending injury to Titans DL opens door for 3 players

Who will replace Marlon Davidson on the Tennessee Titans' 53-man roster?

Titans Agree to Terms with DL Marlon Davidson
Marlon Davidson (92)

Tennessee Titans defensive lineman Marlon Davidson suffered a season-ending biceps injury in joint practice with the Seattle Seahawks, according to Paul Kuharsky. The former second-round pick was firmly in the mix for a 53-man roster spot. Davidson's injury creates an opportunity for three alternative players.

Davidson was listed as a backup defensive tackle behind Jeffery Simmons on the Titans' latest unofficial depth chart. Davidson joined the Titans late last season, and played 163 defensive snaps down the stretch. General manager Ran Carthon was obviously pleased with his performance, because he re-signed him earlier this offseason.

We've identified three Titans defensive linemen that could replace Davidson on the roster.

Keondre Coburn, DT

Keondre Coburn is listed as a defensive end on the Titans' depth chart, but he's more of a traditional nose tackle that clears 330 pounds. Coburn was already close to clinching a roster spot as T'Vondre Sweat's backup following Saturday's impressive performance in Tennessee's preseason win over the San Francisco 49ers. He'll now face even less competition for a roster spot following Davidson's injury.

Coburn looked explosive and disruptive versus the 49ers, and he was impressive in joint practices with the Seahawks as well. He's enjoyed a quality training camp, his first in Tennessee since joining the Titans last December. Coburn is approaching surefire territory behind Simmons, Sweat, and Sebastian Joseph-Day.

Isaiah Iton, DT

We haven't heard enough buzz from Titans undrafted free agent rookie Isaiah Iton. Sources indicate Iton has been very impressive throughout training camp practices. He was a standout performer for the defensive line on Thursday, who often dominated the Seahawks' offensive line in joint sessions.

Kuharasky reports that Iton will play significant snaps in Saturday's upcoming second preseason game. That makes sense, because Titans head coach Brian Callahan has consistently said the starters won't play. With more live in-game reps, Iton could climb the depth chart following Davidson's torn bicep injury.

T.K. McLendon Jr., DE

Sophomore undrafted free agent TK McLendon Jr. is listed as a third-team defensive end on the depth chart behind Joseph-Day and Coburn. He spent the majority of last season on the practice squad, but did receive a late-season call-up to the active roster. McLendon totaled 101 defensive snaps, accumulating three stops, per Pro Football Focus.

Sources in attendance confirmed to Titan Sized that McLendon recorded a coverage sack during Thursday's joint practice. McLendon is likely battling with Iton, Coburn, and Quinton Bohanna for one or two final roster spots on the defensive line. The Titans have always been high on his potential, and he should play significant snaps in the remaining preseason games.
