Star Trek: Section 31 has revealed the actor who will be playing a younger version of Michelle Yeoh's Georgiou in the film during their panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Originally planned as a spinoff series to Star Trek: DiscoverySection 31 is now a movie that will see Emperor Phillipa Georgiou rejoining Starfleet's secret spy division. The film is at least partially set during the "lost era" of Star Trek in the early 24th century, and Georgiou's arrival in this era was first teased when she traveled back in time during Discovery season 2.

During the Star Trek: Section 31 panel at SDCC, for which Screen Rant was in attendance, the first trailer for the movie was released and it revealed a young Georgiou played by Miku Martineau. The scenes featuring Martineau's younger version of Georgiou show her rise to power in the Mirror Universe, indicating that the film will explore her backstory and explain how she became the ruthless Emperor first introduced in Discovery.

How A Young Georgiou Fits Within Section 31's Story

Georgiou's past sins are likely to be explored in the new movie.

While the bulk of Section 31 will likely focus on Georgiou working with her new team as a member of Section 31, the scenes of Martineau's younger version of the character suggest some time will be spent expanding on her backstory. This will not only allow the film to offer a deeper exploration of Georgiou as a character, but reveal in more detail how she came to be the Emperor of her universe. The synopsis for Section 31 says Georgiou will be facing the "sins of her past" and so it makes sense for the film to explicitly show those sins in flashbacks.

In the film's trailer, it's mentioned Georgiou murdered her own people among other terrible deeds. These are the kinds of acts that will likely be depicted in the flashbacks with Martineau's Georgiou, revealing just how ruthless she can be. Along with this younger version of Georgiou, Section 31 has also reportedly cast members of her family, including Cindy Goh and Houston Wong as her parents and Nikita Kim as her younger brother. Just how Georgiou's family will factor into the story remains unknown, but it's possible her family will either be encouraging her rise to power or become victims to it.

Yeoh's performance as Georgiou in Discovery was captivating and is a big reason why the character is now headlining her own movie. This means Martineau has a tough act to follow, but from the few scenes teased in the trailer, she appears more than up to the task of portraying the younger, power-hungry version of the character. When Star Trek: Section 31 releases on Paramount+ in 2025, audiences will learn a lot more about Georgiou, but especially how her past influences where she finds herself in the present.
