Serena Williams’ husband buys £20m stake in world’s most expensive women’s football team

Serena Williams' husband has purchased a eight per cent stake in Chelsea Women, talkSPORT understands.

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian has invested £20million into the Women's Super League champions via his investment fund 776.

The Blues are the most expensive women's football team in the world with a pre-money value at £225, which is set to rise to £245m.

"I've bet big on women’s sports before, and I’m doing it again," he said.

"I'm honoured for the chance to help this iconic club become America's favourite WSL team and much, much more."

It comes after Chelsea sold the team to themselves last year, a move which saw the club accused of 'finding gaps in PSR'.

Ohanian is set to take a seat on the board following his investment in Sonia Bompastor's side.

The American will solely be involved with the women's team, which operates as a separate entity to the men's team.

His entire investment will also be put into the FA Cup finalists following the purchase.

Tennis legend Williams, who won 23 Grand Slam titles in her career, is also set to play a role as part of the deal, although neither her nor her husband are expected to play an official role.

The couple are expected to be in attendance at Wembley Stadium on Sunday for the FA Cup final.

Chelsea face Manchester United at the Home of Football as they chase a domestic treble.

The Blues won the WSL without losing a match and could still clinch a domestic treble

Bompastor has already won two pieces of silverware in her first season in charge of the club.

Following their League Cup triumph in March, the Blues finished the WSL season as unbeaten champions.

They concluded their league campaign on Saturday, ending the season with 19 wins and three losses from 22 matches.

In doing so, Chelsea became the first side in the league's history to reach 60 points in a season.

However, their hopes of a quadruple were ended in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Barcelona secured an 8-2 aggregate victory in their two-legged European tie.

Ohanian arrives in West London with previous experience in the women's game.

Prior to his investment, he had been the majority shareholder in National Women’s Soccer League side Angel City.

The American side were sold last year in a deal worth £190m, then a record for a women's team.

Ohanian had been a co-founder of the club as part of a group including actress Natalie Portman.
