Serena Williams suggests double standards in tennis after Sinner’s drug ban, stating she would have been banned for 20 years.
Serena Williams has raised eyebrows over the differing treatment of male and female players in tennis. After Jannik Sinner’s three-month ban for clostebol use, Williams expressed concern, stating that had she been in his position, she’d have faced a 20-year suspension and lost her Grand Slam titles.
“I love the guy, love this game,” Williams told Time Magazine, referring to Sinner. “Men’s tennis needs him. But if I did that, I would have gotten 20 years. Let’s be honest.”
Sinner, whose ban ends May 4, maintains his innocence, though questions linger about potential preferential treatment. This echoes controversies surrounding other players like Iga Swiatek, who accepted a one-month suspension for trimetazidine use, and Simona Halep, whose four-year ban was reduced after an appeal.
Williams, who retired in 2022 with 23 Grand Slam titles, emphasised the care she took throughout her career to avoid doping issues.
