Tennis legend Serena Williams saw her name dragged into all sorts of headlines after her surprise appearance in Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl halftime show back in February.
Lamar's performance was controversial in itself, and the fact that Williams came out to Crip Walk to one of the rapper's songs made the moment even more contentious.
Williams wasn't the only megastar who had a much-talked-about moment during the big game. Taylor Swift, who came to New Orleans' Superdome to cheer on her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, and the Kansas City Chiefs, was also involved in a rather forgettable incident.
Philadelphia Eagles fans savagely booed the "Fortnight" singer as she was shown on the Jumbotron. This drew a confused reaction from Swift, who sold out that same arena a few months earlier during her "Eras Tour" stop in New Orleans. Clearly, there was a much different crowd during the Super Bowl.
Williams has now shared her honest thoughts on the controversy. The 23-time Grand Slam winner believes the boos were uncalled for.
“Why would you boo her?” Williams said in a recent interview with Time magazine. “That’s so mean. That’s just awful.”
Williams also revealed that she and her daughter, Olympia, wanted to get Swift's autograph. Along with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, the family of three waited patiently outside of Swift's VIP box, hoping for a chance encounter.
“I’m such a mom. I was ready to go in here myself and be like, ‘Taylor, come get this girl,’” Williams said, adding that she opted to respect Swift's space as the Chiefs were getting blown out by the Eagles. “... It’s hard when your team is losing. I totally get it.”
Despite being one of the biggest superstars on the planet herself, Williams still decided to put Swift's feelings above her desire to get an autograph.
Both Swift and Williams have since moved on from their rather eventful Super Bowl experiences. They will likely cross paths again in the future, and perhaps Williams will finally get her memento soon enough.
