ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns spoke to Jeri Ryan about her role in Leverage: Redemption season 3, and asked the beloved Star Trek: Voyager actor if she has any updates to share about Star Trek: Legacy. While Ryan didn't have any news to drop, Jeri reminds fans that she never expected to reprise Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Picard, and she will "never say never" if Star Trek: Legacy happens. Check out Ryan's quote below:
You know what, one thing that this entire Star Trek experience has taught me is never say never. Because I was sure that I had said goodbye to this character and walked away from this franchise many years ago, and I never, ever, ever in a million years expected that I would be back playing her on Picard. So, who knows? Never say never.
Why Paramount+ Didn't Make Star Trek: Legacy
Star Trek: Picard's Cast & Creative Team Want To Return For Legacy
Star Trek: Picard season 3 was immensely popular, and its ending setup for Star Trek: Legacy was an idea that fans and the cast and creative team of Picard, including showrunner Terry Matalas, were eager for. However, Paramount+ did not move forward on making Star Trek: Legacy. Instead, Paramount+ downsized its Star Trek content in 2023 and 2024, leaving only two series: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
Paramount+'s reduction of Star Trek content has to do with the overall cost-cutting of its streaming business and the sale of Paramount Global to Skydance Media. However, fan interest in Star Trek: Legacy and the continuation of the 25th century era of Star Trek: The Next Generation has not waned. There continue to be online campaigns urging Paramount+ to make Star Trek: Legacy, and Jeri Ryan is open to return as Captain Seven of Nine.
Our Take On Star Trek: Legacy's Future
A Lot Of Questions Surround What Happens To Star Trek After 2026
Star Trek on Paramount+ has Star Trek: Strange New Worlds seasons 3 and 4, which takes the popular prequel into 2026, and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy seasons 1 and 2, which could premiere in 2026 with the second season possibly following in 2027. After that, however, question marks surround Star Trek on Paramount+. While there are other Star Trek series in development, like a live-action comedy from Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien, no new Star Trek has been officially announced to go into production.
The state of Star Trek streaming movies is also unknown after the negative reception of Paramount+'s debut effort, Star Trek: Section 31. If Star Trek: Legacy happens, it may be more likely to be greenlit as a streaming movie than a full-blown (and more expensive) TV series. However, there is also the issue of regaining Terry Matalas' services, since the showrunner has other commitments, including to Marvel Studios. 2 years later, fans and actors like Jeri Ryan are still in a hopeful waiting game regarding Star Trek: Picard's continuation.
