Fresh off a productive season with the D.C. Defenders of the UFL, the 26-year-old joins the team he’s supported since childhood. His journey has taken him through the NFL, spring football, and now back to the place he’s always called home.
Deon Jackson, a Detroit native, has appeared in 29 NFL games, tallying 283 rushing yards and two touchdowns with the Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, and New York Giants. His best season came in 2022 with the Colts, when he posted 236 yards and a score.

"I’ve been a Lions fan since I was a kid. Detroit isn’t just where I’m from — it’s who I am. I know exactly what Lions football means: grit, pride, and never backing down. Wearing this jersey feels like coming home, and I’m ready to fight for this city," Jackson said.
In the UFL’s 2024 campaign, Jackson rushed for 417 yards and four touchdowns in the regular season, adding 156 yards and four more scores in the playoffs. His performance helped D.C. reach the league’s championship stage.
Jackson becomes the fourth UFL player signed by Detroit this offseason, joining Nick Whiteside, Jacob Saylors, and Steven Stilianos. He’ll compete with Saylors, Sione Vaki, and Jabari Small for what could be the final running back slot on the 53-man roster.
With Vaki sidelined by injury and special teams roles still up for grabs, Jackson’s experience could give him an edge. The Lions’ backfield remains led by Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, neither of whom has played this preseason.
Detroit will face the Miami Dolphins in their next preseason outing, with joint practices scheduled earlier in the week — the perfect stage for a hometown player to prove he belongs in the Honolulu Blue for the long haul.
