Star Trek: Discovery's David Ajala Still Wants To Tell Burnham & Book's Lost Year Story

Star Trek: Discovery's David Ajala would love to tell the story of the lost year Cleveland Booker and Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) spent together in season 3. Following Star Trek: Discovery's time jump to the 32nd century, Commander Burnham literally crashed into Book at the start of Discovery season 3's premiere. Burnham arrived in the year 3188 and didn't know if the USS Discovery would make it to the 32nd century. Before Discovery did arrive a year later, Michael and Book (and his cat, Grudge) spent that time traveling the galaxy together as couriers - and falling in love.

Screen Rant's Glenn Bunn interviewed David Ajala at MCM Comic Con in London to talk about Star Trek: Discovery's series finale, "Life, Itself," and his time as Cleveland Booker on the Paramount+ series. Ajala was asked if he would be willing to come back and tell the story of Michael Burnham and Book's 'lost year' together. Read his reply and thoughts on Michael and Book's love story in his quote below:

Oh, absolutely. I think that'd be an amazing story. Because that year, I call it "the adventures of Burnham and Book featuring Grudge the Queen", like that specific period of time, I think there was so much growth for Michael Burnham, so much growth for Cleveland Booker. I think that journey inside of that year has allowed them to be the individuals that they've become, that we then meet in the rest of Season Three.

I just feel that these two are meant to have met each other, and they'll continue to be in each other's lives forever, and I know things can be rocky, but the course of true love never did run smooth and Cleveland book has gone through a whole gamut of emotions and experiences that has led them to this moment, right now in Season Five, where he's been given a second chance... and he grabs it like a life raft.

Discovery's Burnham & Book Is One Of Star Trek's Greatest Love Stories

Will Burnham and Book reunite in Discovery season 5's finale?

Star Trek's Captains often find romance much more difficult than commanding a starship or facing enemy aliens, but Star Trek: Discovery boldly made a love story between Captain Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker central to the series. Not since Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) has a Star Trek Captain juggled his Starfleet duty with a long-term relationship. Burnham and Book challenge each other, better each other, and, sometimes, disappoint each other in mature, realistic, and poignant ways.

Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano) are trying to make their relationship work on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker have struggled to redefine what they mean to each other since they ended their relationship in Star Trek: Discovery season 4. Despite their trials, their genuine affection for each other remains, and fingers are crossed that Michael and Book will come back together by the time Star Trek: Discovery season 5 ends. But the beginning of Book and Burnham's love story also needs to be told, and maybe someday, what happened during Michael and Booker's lost year together in Star Trek: Discovery season 4 will be revealed.
