Star Trek’s Jack Quaid Leaves Boimler Behind With 2 New Movies I Can’t Wait For

Jack Quaid is moving on from Star Trek: Lower Decks and Lieutenant Brad Boimler, but Jack stars in two of the most exciting new movies to kick off 2025, Companion and Novocaine. For five seasons, Quaid played the animated Brad Boimler on Star Trek: Lower Decks, as well as Boimler's transporter clone, Captain William Boimler. Jack also brought Ensign Brad Boimler to live-action, alongside Tawny Newsome as Ensign Beckett Mariner, in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' acclaimed season 2 crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Making his motion picture acting debut as the villainous Marvel in The Hunger Games, Jack Quaid's star has steadily risen since 2019, when Jack hit Prime Video as one of the series leads in The Boys. Following up voicing Boimler on Star Trek: Lower Decks, Quaid returned to movie screens as Richie Kirsch, one of the Ghostface killers in Scream (2022). Jack Quaid's talent and versatility have garnered him two major feature film leading roles, and they broaden Jack's range beyond the excitable and heroic Boimler in Star Trek: Lower Decks and the noble Man of Steel that Quaid voices in My Adventures With Superman.

Jack Quaid Stars In The Twisted Thriller Companion

Companion Also Stars Yellowjackets & Heretic's Sophie Thatcher

Jack Quaid stars in Companion, which premieres in theaters on January 31. Companion is a romantic psychological thriller billed as "from the unhinged creators of Barbarian." Companion is written and directed by Drew Hancock, and produced by Zack Cregger, who directed Barbarian, 2022's surprising and ingenious horror tour de force. Along with Quaid, Companion stars Sophie Thatcher, Lukas Gage, Harvey Guillen, Rupert Friend, and Megan Suri.

Companion's story is a well-guarded secret, but the teaser trailer hints at an insane love story between Jack Quaid's Josh and Sophie Thatcher's Iris. Thatcher was a scene-stealer in Yellowjackets and wowed in one of 2024's best horror films, Heretic, opposite Hugh Grant and Chloe East. While Jack Quaid certainly has the charm to be a romantic lead, Companion is poised to be an unnerving and shocking spin on the standard rom-com. Companion intriguingly seems to tap into Jack Quaid's dark side, allowing him to break bad for the first time since he carved up victims in Woodsboro as Scream's Ghostface killer.

Jack Quaid Becomes An Action Hero In Novocaine

Novocaine Also Stars Prey's Amber Midthunder

Jack Quaid takes on his first bonafide action movie hero role in Novocaine, which premieres in theaters on March 14. Written by Lars Jacobson, and directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, Novocaine also stars Amber Midthunder, Jacob Batalon, Betty Gabriel, Matt Walsh, and Ray Nicholson. Quaid plays Nathan Craine, a bank executive who has a rare disorder: the inability to feel pain. It's a premise that promises laughs and gore galore from Jack Quaid.

Novocaine looks to cement Jack Quaid as an offbeat but genuine action hero.

When Nathan's girlfriend, played by Amber Midthunder, is taken hostage by bank robbers, he goes on a crusade to rescue her, with Craine's resilience to pain put to the test in grotesquely hilarious ways. Novocaine seems to pluck Quaid from his ribald environs of The Boys, and puts him front and center as an erasatz "superhero" dubbed "Novocaine." Midthunder also dazzled as the lead in 2022's Predator prequel, Prey, and Novocaine looks to cement Jack Quaid as an offbeat but genuine action hero.

Will Jack Quaid Return To Star Trek As Boimler?

Fans Hope Star Trek: Lower Decks Will Return

Boimler in command of the Cerritos controls in Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5 Ep 10

Even as the USS Cerritos warped away to new adventures at the end of Star Trek: Lower Decks' finale, it was clear that Jack Quaid isn't done as Boimler, nor are fans done with wanting to see more of the Lower Deckers. Lieutenants Boimler and Mariner ended Star Trek: Lower Decks with the unwelcome promotion to co-First Officers by new USS Cerritos Captain Jack Ransom (Jerry O'Connell). Meanwhile, Brad's doppelganger, Captain William Boimler, is spearheading the exploration of the multiverse with his crew of alternate-reality Star Trek legacy characters.

Star Trek: Lower Decks has concluded its run on Paramount+, but hope springs eternal that Mike McMahan's animated series could be revived on a new streaming service. McMahan also dreams of staging Star Trek: Lower Decks in live-action. Meanwhile, Tawny Newsome's in-development live-action Star Trek comedy is designed to allow potential appearances by her Lower Decks cast mates, and Jack Quaid's comeback as Boimler has to be at the top of Tawny's wish list.

Jack Quaid also joined the cast of Heads of State, the upcoming action comedy film starring Idris Elba and John Cena.

However, barring a surprise in the in-production Star Trek: Starfleet Academy or Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, any future animated or live-action return by Jack Quaid as Boimler is likely years away. Quaid will be front and center in The Boys' fifth and final season on Prime Video and My Adventures With Superman on Max, but Companion and Novocaine thrillingly promise to be the ultimate cinematic Jack Quaid double-shot to usher in 2025.
