The sky isn't falling, Pittsburgh — the Steelers offense finally turned the corner at training camp.
After worrisome performances from the unit as a whole, the Steelers offense was victorious over the defense in seven shots on Wednesday, thanks in large part to the Aaron Rodgers–DK Metcalf connection — as reported by PennLive's Nick Farabaugh.
On the first play of the seven-shots drill, Rodgers hooked up with Metcalf on a slant — putting the offense up 1-0.
Rodgers, on the second attempt, looked to complete a pass to the corner of the end zone but was incomplete — tying the score at 1-1.
Rodgers looked Metcalf's way once more on the next pass, but rookie DL Yahya Black batted down the ball — giving the defense a 2-1 lead.
Mason Rudolph entered the drill and attempted a pass for WR Robert Woods — but CB Beanie Bishop broke up the play, resulting in a 3-1 lead for the defense.
On the next play, Rudolph connected with Woods off the play-action — the offense closing the score, 3-2 defense.
RB Lew Nichols ran the ball in for a touchdown on the next play — giving the offense a chance at winning it all with a 3-3 tie.
Enter Rodgers and Metcalf, who connected on the final play of the seven-shots drill — giving the offense a 4-3 victory.
Many were beginning to wonder if the overhauled Steelers defense was responsible for the recent offensive struggles early at training camp — but the one-two punch of Rodgers and Metcalf put that narrative to bed on Tuesday.
