The Pittsburgh Steelers will enter 2025 with multiple new faces on both sides of the football. They had an extremely busy offseason, as Arthur Smith's offense will now feature a four-time MVP and future Hall of Fame quarterback in Aaron Rodgers. Pittsburgh also acquired two-time Pro Bowler DK Metcalf in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks back in March.
Many fans remain uncomfortable with starting Rodgers in 2025, as the 41 year old veteran is just two seasons removed from a torn Achilles suffered on the opening drive of the 2023 season. Rodgers spent the past two years with the New York Jets, as the quarterback's tenure in the Big Apple was highlighted by injuries and mediocrity. The former Jet will look to bounce back in Pittsburgh, as the 20-year veteran enters what is more than likely his final season in the NFL.
With speculation continuing to surround Pittsburgh's offense entering 2025, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly took a moment to share his thoughts as to what he expects out of the veteran quarterback this season.
"It's a total different passing offense from Russell Wilson, moon ball, whatever you wanna call it," Kaboly stated. "Not gonna see that. It's gonna be quick throws, catch and run, use the speed of [Calvin] Austin."
Kaboly then went on to speak more in depth as to what he may expect out of Rodgers, claiming the former Jet may finish as the worst in the league in air yards.
"We're gonna sit there and look at PFF [Pro Football Focus] and say, oh, Aaron Rodgers is worst in the league in air yards. That very well could happen this year," Kaboly explained.
Many fans would agree with Kaboly's comments, as Rodgers is entering his 21st season of professional football. He was credited with 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2024, as the veteran is expected to be fully recovered from the Achilles injury entering 2025. He is not expected to play Saturday in Jacksonville for the Steelers' 2025 preseason opener, but the veteran quarterback is expected to make his debut in the near future.
Rodgers put together a solid 2024 campaign given the circumstances, as the Steelers' starter is still just three seasons removed from his last MVP Award in 2021 and could thrive if healthy. Rodgers will have a number of elite weapons at his disposal, as Metcalf and Calvin Austin lll will be his top receiving options entering 2025. The Steelers also have Jonnu Smith and Pat Freiermuth as dangerous targets, as Smith is expected to see time at multiple positions throughout this season on offense.
With the Steelers' first preseason game of the year kicking off this weekend, the team recently announced the initial depth chart for the 2025 season. Pittsburgh named both Freiermuth and Smith as the tight end one (TE1), as both players are elite and widely regarded as top tight ends in the league. Freiermuth is expected to take on more of a traditional tight end role, whereas Smith will more than likely spend time at wide receiver as well.
As Rodgers finds himself fully healthy and set to start Week 1, many fans would agree with Kaboly's comments and continue to voice their speculation throughout social media. Both Metcalf and Austin should aid in helping Rodgers succeed, as the veteran will have a number of elite targets to throw the ball to. Fans are encouraged to keep a close eye on Rodgers for the remainder of the offseason, as he will look to shine throughout his first year in Pittsburgh.
