Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Darius Slay has played alongside some great quarterbacks in his NFL career. He won a Super Bowl with Jalen Hurts and played the majority of his career with the Detroit Lions alongside Matthew Stafford.
Talking about the Steelers’ new quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, for the first time since he signed, Slay believes the Steelers have set up an ideal situation for the four-time MVP.
Slay points to Rodgers’ ability to mentor Will Howard as a big boost for the signing, on top of the explosive dynamics Rodgers should have with DK Metcalf on the football field.
“I think he’s a great addition because the fact that we got a younger guy that got drafted from Ohio State,” Slay said on the Mina Kimes Show. “He can train him and help him get to where he’s at. Bringing DK [Metcalf] along, so he don’t have to actually find him a true number one receiver. He’s got one that’s right there and that’s ready to go. It’s going to be fun.”
Rodgers comes into Pittsburgh with expectations to bring them a playoff win. But the 41-year-old sorted out many things in his personal life before inking a deal with the Steelers. His relationship with head coach Mike Tomlin is why he signed with them.
“I think it starts with Mike Tomlin,” Rodgers said. “I’ve been a fan of his for a long time. There’s a few iconic franchises in the NFL. I played for one of them for 18 years. This is another one of those. There’s something special about — obviously this area, so many great quarterbacks are from Pittsburgh. I feel like Pittsburgh has been a part of my career from the beginning, playing for Mike McCarthy for 13 years.”
Rodgers says he feels better coming off his Achilles injury now than 12 months ago. It has been nearly 24 months since that injury, and Rodgers feels more mobile and nimble than he did to start the season last year.
Rodgers plans to bring the skill players out to Malibu for a workout during the dead period between mandatory minicamp and training camp.
