Steelers' Arthur Smith Admits He's Thrilled With Pittsburgh's "Top Of The League" Rushing Attack

The Pittsburgh Steelers expected new Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith to be able to turn around this offense fast. Smith was tasked with a difficult job, but one he clearly was prepared for, as the Steelers offense has been much improved in the 2024 season compared to the 2023 season. The changes Smith has implemented have helped elevate the offense, but there are still areas that need improvement.

One of the more disappointing aspects, according to many Steelers fans, has been the state of the rushing attack. Despite the improvement in other areas, the running game has not yet reached the dominant level many had hoped for. The running backs, including Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren, have shown flashes, but consistency has been an issue.

Still, despite the criticism from fans, Smith spoke out in defense of the rushing attack. He expressed confidence in the unit's potential, noting that the running game is evolving and has improved as the season has gone on. Smith remains committed to a balanced offensive approach and believes the rushing attack will become a strength as the team continues to gel.

"I wouldn't call it struggles," Smith stated via a team-issued transcript. "If I look at it objectively, it's all really people's perception. We're towards the top of the league in rushing. Sometimes it's not as efficient as you want, but I think the biggest thing, if you watched us closely, it's really all the way around."

Smith’s statement is certainly intriguing. While the Steelers' rushing attack may be considered above average by certain metrics, and the statistics may support his claim that their running game is efficient, the reality feels different to many fans.

The running game often appears predictable, and the toss play has been a source of frustration. Fans had high hopes for the running game to be a true strength this season, but it hasn’t consistently met those expectations.

Smith enjoyed significant success as the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans, particularly with their dominant ground game. Of course, having a player like Derrick Henry made his job easier, but Harris and Warren are also talented backs in their own right. The fact that they haven't found their rhythm in the way many had expected is what has raised concerns among the fan base. The lack of consistent production from the running game has been a key talking point, as fans were hoping for more from the duo.

Steelers' Rushing Attack Hasn't Been All That Great When You Look Into The Numbers

Looking at the numbers, the Steelers rank 29th in the NFL with 3.9 yards per carry. They’ve rushed the ball 455 times for 1,773 yards and 12 touchdowns. While the volume of attempts—second most in the league—could contribute to lower efficiency, the stats still don’t inspire much confidence. More carries naturally lead to a dip in average, but even so, the numbers don’t give Steeler Nation much to be excited about.

The Steelers' rushing attack, led by Harris and Warren, was expected to be much stronger this season. Both running backs are coming off disappointing performances against the Philadelphia Eagles and will be looking to bounce back in a big way against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday.

Steelers' Najee Harris

To claim the AFC North title and sweep the Ravens, the Steelers will need standout performances from their backs, especially with the status of star wide receiver George Pickens uncertain. The pressure is on Harris and Warren to deliver and help carry the offense when it matters most.
