The Pittsburgh Steelers had a great game in Week 7 of 2024. New quarterback Russell Wilson torched the New York Jets' defense as undrafted rookie Beanie Bishop Jr. recorded his first two career interceptions. He even had quarterback Aaron Rodgers sign them for him, even though he was the one that threw them in the first place. It was a wild sequence of events, but Bishop did get his intercepted footballs signed. Now that they are teammates, they can have a laugh about it together.
Bishop told Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette another funny story about him and Rodgers. This one, however, was when the former MVP showed up to the team facilities in March to meet with the executives. As Batko reports, him and Cory Trice Jr. had just finished a workout and were relaxing and recovering.
"I met [Aaron Rodgers] when he was at the facility," Bishop told Batko. "He’s a funny guy... 'Are y'all going to keep f***ing around, or are y'all going to work out?' Just funny stuff."
Even with Rodgers obviously joking around with them, he still wants to see Bishop pick off every other quarterback repeatedly like that Week 7 game. Meanwhile, Trice is looking to keep a spot on the team as a depth piece, and that is certainly not guaranteed at this point with all the signings the team made in free agency. However, it's still nice to relax a bit after a hard workout and hang out with a buddy on the team.
If Bishop falls back to second-team defense, he won't get many chances to intercept Rodgers in team periods during mandatory minicamp and training camp. Brandin Echols was signed to help provide stability at that position, so the former undrafted free agent will have to compete with him for the ability to get more snaps in the regular season and in practice.
Either way, Rodgers won't have to worry about Bishop and Trice "f***ing around" as roster spots could be on the line here. The Steelers also signed a veteran outside cornerback in Darius Slay, so Trice will be looking to prove that his young, energetic body can outplay the seasoned veteran that has been there and done that with every possible scenario a defensive back could be put into in the NFL. That will be a fun battle to watch in training camp.
Slay and Joey Porter Jr. are currently projected to be the starters on the outside, with Echols looking to start in the slot, where Bishop will compete. Trice will be competing for a depth spot with James Pierre and seventh-round rookie Donte Kent. Depending on what happens in other position groups, the Steelers could keep either five or six cornerbacks, which would potentially leave a quality depth piece without a job on roster cutdown day.

Trice has a lot of potential, but injuries keep holding him back. If he unfortunately suffers another long-term injury in training camp, his time in Pittsburgh could be up. Meanwhile, Pierre is a special teams standout, but the Steelers are loaded in that regard, so he will have to prove his worth on defense if he wants to keep a job. Kent is also looking to be a return man, so that's where he will try and add value while also trying to play wherever he is asked to.
No matter who Rodgers gets to face in practice, he will be testing all of them to make sure they embarrass other teams like how they embarrassed him in 2024. Iron sharpens iron. One thing Rodgers does have is a high football IQ, so the defense will be tested on giving unusual looks regularly. You can't bait him with a basic Cover 2 Man concept, and most quarterbacks are the same way. There will be plenty of opportunities for all the cornerbacks to prove themselves.
