Steelers' Beanie Bishop Jr. Told Alex Highsmith Something Crazy Right Before Week 8 Game-Winning Interception

The Pittsburgh Steelers' undrafted free agent cornerback, Beanie Bishop Jr., has notched three interceptions in just two games, a feat that’s turning heads around the league. The 2024 season, however, didn’t start so smoothly for Bishop. Thrust into a starting role at nickelback due to injuries and roster gaps, Bishop found himself in a trial by fire—a massive leap for any undrafted rookie, especially at such a crucial position.

Though he was a star at West Virginia University, Bishop entered the NFL without the prestige of a draft selection. Still, the Steelers saw his potential and were eager to bring him on board, understanding the risks involved in relying on an undrafted free agent in a starting capacity.

Despite the early challenges, Bishop has risen to the occasion, steadily refining his game and silencing doubts. His grit and adaptability have made him a key contributor to the Steelers' defense, demonstrating that talent and determination can often eclipse draft status. His pivotal interception in Week 8 against the New York Giants not only sealed a 26-18 victory for the Steelers, but also underscored his growth. Week after week, he’s proving that his spot on the roster isn’t just deserved—it’s essential.

Following the game, Bishop shared a notable moment with Steelers insider Mike DeFabo. He revealed that just before his game-winning play, he had confided in Alex Highsmith, telling him something that bordered on prophetic.

"I told Alex Highsmith I was going to end the game that drive," Bishop said. "Honestly, you know what I mean and that’s just something that I pride myself on. Just go out there and try and get a stop to finish the game."

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones had a chance to lead a game-tying touchdown drive, but his high pass slipped through Joey Porter Jr.'s hands. Waiting in the wings, Bishop seized the moment, snatching the interception that secured the Steelers' victory.

This play, like his previous pick, showed his knack for being in the right place at the right time, and he’s quickly building a reputation as a ball hawk. For a young player, Bishop is showing skills that might earn him a larger role on the defense.

Steelers' Defense Set To Get Cam Sutton Back From Suspension

Meanwhile, Cam Sutton returned to the Steelers in the 2024 offseason after legal troubles led to his release from the Detroit Lions. Sutton’s off-field issues resulted in an eight-game suspension, but he’s now eligible to return following the Steelers' bye week. His return may come at the expense of Bishop, as Sutton is expected to reclaim the starting nickel spot, potentially pushing Bishop out of the starting lineup.

With Sutton’s return imminent, Bishop’s recent performances make the competition for the nickel position all the more intriguing. While Sutton brings veteran experience, Bishop's playmaking ability has made him hard to overlook.

Bishop’s confidence and emerging leadership show he’s becoming far more than a fill-in; he’s growing into a player the Steelers can count on in clutch moments. Sutton’s return only strengthens the Steelers' secondary, bringing valuable depth and the veteran experience that can elevate the unit even further.

With both Bishop and Sutton proving themselves as capable options at nickel, the Steelers now have an enviable good problem. Bishop has credited Sutton for his own growth within the secondary, acknowledging the veteran’s role in his improvements. Steelers fans are excited to see how Sutton’s return might enhance an already promising defense.
